Budapest City
In recent years, Budapest has become an increasingly popular destination for travellers. Hungary's capital has much to attract visitors of all budgets and interests. Split by the River Danube the city has many attractions and green spaces, historic sights and museums and a vibrant night-life befitting of a major city.
The city is divided into three areas: Buda, the hilly part to the west of the Danube, Pest, the flat part to the east and Castle Hill, the historic centre where many attractions are located. There are many sights worth exploring on Castle Hill. The Royal Palace is probably the most well-known and is home to the National Gallery with its art displays, the Fisherman's Bastion which offers fantastic views of the city and the sumptuously decorated Matthias Church. There are a number of other museums located here including the Military Museum, the Historical Museum of Budapest and the Museum of Medieval Judaism.
The attractive Danube Bridges, particularly the Chain Bridge, make a promenade along the river banks or river trip worthwhile. Pest, the business and administrative centre of Hungary, is also home to many interesting sights. Guided tours are available of the impressive neo-gothic Parliament building and the city's main church, St Stephens, is also worth visiting for its impressive architecture.
There are also a number of museums including the National History Museum, Museum of Transport and the Holocaust Memorial Centre.
Andrassy ut (boulevard) in Pest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has numerous attractions including the State Opera House, the House of Terror, set in the former Hungarian secret police headquarters and Heroes Square. Well known also for its shopping, Andrassy ut is also home to famous name stores such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Burberry.
The very pleasant City Park (Városliget) is located just behind Heroes Square. Places to visit in the City Park are the Vajdahunyad Castle, Circus, Zoological Gardens and the Vidam Amusement Park.
The pedestrianized Vaci utca, located in the 5th. district and running parallel to the River Danube, is known for its selection of stores, cafes, bars and restaurants and Vorosmarty ter (square), which is located at the northern end of Vaci utca. Vorosmarty ter is well known for the annual Christmas market and other events and fairs throughout the year, the Gerbeau Coffee House and the Hard Rock Cafe, which opened in November 2011
Buda also has its share of attractions. Roman ruins, including those of thermal baths, can be seen at Aquincum. The Statue Park is home to a collection of statues from the Communist era while the Kassak Museum is home to an excellent collection of modern Hungarian art.
Budapest is a famous spa city so it worth experiencing one of the public baths found here. All of the public baths are built around hot springs and have a central thermal pool. Traditional baths such as those found at Szechenyi or Gellert offer an authentic bathing experience whilst there are also a number of hotels with modern spa facilities.
The city has a number of excellent places to eat, catering for a range of budgets. Hungarian coffee houses should be experienced while visiting the city. The city has a host of restaurants serving everything from traditional Hungarian food to vegetarian or kosher food. There are also a number of ship restaurants, serving traditional Hungarian and international cuisines. These can be found along the Pest side of the Danube.
Entry requirements for Hungary include a valid passport or, in the case of EU nationals, a valid national ID card. EU nationals who intend to stay longer than 90 days must register with the immigration department. Non EU nationals need to apply for a long term visa.
Whatever the length of your stay, you will find that Budapest has so much to offer.
