Airport Transfer Options

If you are arriving by air we recommend that you plan your transfer to your accommodation address before you travel.

We have found that the most consistently reliable and fastest transfer is the service provided by FoxTransfer.
Avoid long waiting times at airport taxi ranks or lengthy and
uncomfortable travel on public transport. FoxTransfer drivers speak English as well as their native language and will drive you in comfort, speed and safety to your hotel or apartment - and at a reasonable price.
This service has been used by many of our guests and has been highly recommended.

There are several options for your airport to city transfer, as follows:

Taxi:
Főtaxi is the official taxi service from both terminals at Budapest Liszt Ferenc Airport.
They have a fixed price, which can be paid in either Hungarian Forints or Euro.

Transfer Shuttle Buses:
There are several transfer shuttle buses, with fixed prices, operating from Budapest Liszt Ferenc Airport.

Please be aware: Transfer service buses will wait at the airport until they have sufficient passengers to make the trip into the city worthwhile. We recently heard of a case where guests sat waiting in the bus for almost 1 hour before departing the airport, and then were one of the last passengers to be dropped off at their apartment. Total time from the airport to the apartment was finally over 2 hours!

Public Transport: There are options available depending on your arrival terminal, detailed here below:

Rail:
By train, which runs between Terminal 1 and the Budapest Western Railway Station (Nyugati Palyaudvar).
The journey time is about 30 minutes. If arriving at Terminal 2, there is a bus link available, which will bring you to Terminal 1.

Bus/Metro:
Bus number 200 runs between both
airport terminals and the closest underground metro station,
Köbánya-Kispest, on the (blue) metro line 3.
The journey time from the airport to the city centre can take up to 1,5 hours. You need to purchase a pre-paid ticket before using the bus or metro. Please see the terms and conditions concerning type, amount and maximum size of luggage allowed at:

Arrival by Road:
As in most capital cities, parking in Budapest can be a difficult and frustrating experience. We recommend that you check out the location of 24-hour car parking in the vicinity of your accommodation, in advance of your arrival, as on-street parking can be difficult to find and is usually limited to 2 or 3 hours at any single parking meter, depending on the area. Parking restrictions are generally in force between Monday to Friday 08:00 to 20:00, however in certain areas, 24x7 parking restrictions apply. Always check the details shown on parking meters. Parking times and fees can vary between districts and areas. Of course, parking violations are penalized with either a fine or in some areas, wheel clamping or towing. We advise that you have sufficient Hungarian change to pay for the parking meter
before your arrival in Budapest to avoid any parking fines you may get while changing currency.

Arrival by Rail: Budapest has three railway stations where international trains stop. They are Keleti (Eastern) Palyaudvar,
Deli (Southern) Palyaudvar and Nyugati (West) Palyaudvar. Each station connected by metro to the city centre. It is worthwhile to check out the closest metro station to your accommodation before you start your journey. Metro tickets are available at the metro station ticket offices and Hungarian currency and major credit cards are accepted. Please note that if your metro journey involves changing from one metro line to another, you will need to purchase a ticket for each sector and validate the ticket in the machine before entering the platform at each of the metro stations. Failure to do this could result in a penalty.

Of course, each main railway station has a taxi rank. We recommend that you ask the taxi driver the approximate fare to your destination before starting your journey.
Hailing a taxi on the street should be avoided as they can be much more expensive than those taxis standing at official taxi ranks.

As a General Rule: We recommend that you have an amount of local currency with you before traveling to Budapest, either for public transport, taxi or parking meters.
Although the airport and train stations do have exchange offices, the rates offered can vary substantially from those available in Budapest city centre. ATMs are available for drawing local currency with your credit card, however you should check the charges for withdrawing cash outside of your own country with your card issuer.

You should never change currency on the street and should only use official exchange offices or banks.
